Monday News: I burned my Taquitos while writing this Edition

We’re a week past the 4th and I’m waiting for the first 3 days of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 to completely destroy my work environment while I try to read A Dance with Dragons. Our lobby can’t really fit a ton of people so I’m sure it’s going to once again be an ocean of Hogwart’s uniforms every time I come downstairs. Warner is going all out since Green Lantern stalled; that’s their reward for rushing a project like that. Anyway, let’s talk about one of the good comic movies from this summer!

Heimdall rated the boxart! Yaaaay!

-IGN has the first details revealed for the blu-ray of Thor. As always the nicest version comes with a DVD and Digital Copy, neither of which I ever end up using as they’re for people who have more time to watch movies. As for me, any free night I have is spent wrestling with if I should allow myself to watch something I own or try and actually watch what Netflix gives me. Anyway, there aren’t any mentions of deleted scenes specifically but I’m hoping that they’re in there. The theatrical runtime of almost exactly 2 hours made me suspicious especially when I had different memos leading up to the release with other lengths. The main features they mention are the ones that relate closest to the plugging of The Avengers so we’re going to have to wait for a few details as they get that out of the way first. What’s interesting to note on the cover art is they used one of the international finals for the normal blu-ray and an enhanced version of the teaser for the 3D. I like them about equal but I’ll likely end up getting the 3D version since those often end up having the best price breaks. Thor never really got a great poster sadly… [Source: IGN]

The Howling Commandoes fight their greatest foe: color saturation

-Speaking of posters that aren’t great, remember when I was talking about what a shame it’d be if the international market got a better Captain America final then we did? Well my fears have been laid to rest forever as the style of the overseas posters have been revealed and they are pretty much the goofiest things I’ve seen for a major summer movie. The French poster is even worse if you can believe it but that might be subtle revenge on their part for Peggy Carter being taken from the French Resistance in the comics and transplanted to whatever wing of the British/American military she is in the movie.

This movie isn't really coming together for me. Is it doing it for anyone else?

Also, the final for the new Conan is out and it’s pretty whatever.

-So I hope everyone out there who loves Tintin like I do is ready to share it with the annoying people that will pretend to have been fans for years once they see this new trailer that’s out. I don’t know what the exact nature of it is but it does have the the Secret of the Unicorn subtitle so I’m assuming it’s an overseas version. I’m hoping this isn’t the last trailer we see though; I’m greedy like that. [Source: Youtube]

Yeah this about sums it up guys. I'm pretty sure that annoying kid who "helped" me with that lens breakdown worked here too.

-Are you like me and live in a crappy city where everyone champions the singular art house theater simply because it has “history”? Well indulge in some bitterness with me and look at this article discussing how the posters commissioned by the Alamo Drafthouse are so cool that they’re being archived by the AMPAS library! Sure a lot of them are for movies that the Academy would never respect in this or any other lifetime but that doesn’t matter when you’re the theater backed by Harry Knowles and AICN. Weep at how the best my city can offer is The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the 600oth time in 8 years as these guys bankroll new posters for stuff like Cronos. I searched for a copy of Cronos on VHS to watch for years and these guys show it on a lark! I HATE THEM. [Source: AICN]

They're not shooting in Atlanta too, are they?

-Anybody watching Falling Skies? I’m not but it seems to have grabbed a hold of some success as TNT has already renewed it for a second season. As unusual as it is for me not to watch something with Spielberg’s name somewhere on it, the ads never grabbed me in a way that made it seem like anything more than The Walking Dead crossed loosely with Steven’s own version of War of the Worlds. I guess I’ll try and watch some of it when they have a marathon at some point (as TNT is so fond of doing) but until then I’m going to have to rely on it’s viewers to convince me it’s any good. It debuted the strongest of any new Cable show this year so someone has to be watching. [Source: Deadline Hollywood Daily]

Still waiting for the blu-ray of this and the first season...

-More TV news comes in the form of Jason Sudeikis being cast in the third season of Eastbound and Down. I’m glad to see they’re getting a move on this already though if I’m remembering right, the show was only planned to be 3 seasons. Sudeikis will be playing some friend of Kenny Powers though we’ll have to see what that means for Stevie. [Source: Variety]

Probably too expensive for me to ever get

-If you’re one of those lucky S.O.B.s fans that are going to SDCC this year then there’s this great visual checklist of the toy exclusives you can send to me  find while you’re there. As always, the highlights are the Hasbro and Mattel pieces with both creating their own special after-con sale nightmares for me with Zaranna and Queen Marlena respectively. I’d like to bite on the Skystriker painted as Starscream but that’s pretty much a pure luxury item; credit to Hasbro for doing something very cool but not absolutely vital to everyone’s collection. Still doesn’t make up for Sgt. Slaughter last year though.[Source: Poe Ghostal and Idle Hands]

-SDCC is apparently not going to have a ton in the way of panels this year for the next season of movies; I guess the studios are finally seeing the disconnect between enthusiastic SDCC/Internet reception and actual success. Pretty sure we can blame Sucker Punch for that.Anyway, the below average performances of many of the well-received projects this year won’t stop Relativity Media/Lionsgate from pimping the crap out of the goofy looking Immortals so I’m sure I’ll have to listen about it from someone. Amazing Spider-man is apparently the only comic project from the big two that’s getting a push as Marvel/Disney is forgoing plugging The Avengers. Strange that Man of Steel won’t have anything at all since everyone already can’t shut up about The Dark Knight Rises. Maybe they’re still in damage control mode over Green Lantern but Zach Snyder not selling himself there is almost as big an absence as some of the perpetual whores Seth Green and Kevin Smith. Maybe he’s doing what they did and is trying to convince George Lucas of his talent so he can be authorized to do some lame project with enough references to get it a pass from the less discriminating. Original Trilogy for the win! Comicon made Snyder so I’m sure he’ll  at least show up and get plenty of free press over what a fan he is or whatever. It’s not too late to try and make Man of Steel a good movie WB! You can fire him for taking an unauthorized vacation! [Source: Variety]

Well would you look at that! The news somehow became an editorial at the end there, but this is my website and I’ll do what I want. Still enough of my day was spent here. Time to compress the thoughts I have about District 9 into something comprehensible as I’ve been putting it off for about 6 months. Don’t take any wooden nickels everyone!
